Empowering the Masses (ETM) is a South Dallas-based nonprofit dedicated to breaking the cycle of generational poverty through education, workforce development, and health equity. Founded in 2018 by Executive Director Tammy Johnson, ETM operates under the belief that Education + Advocacy = Empowerment.

ETM addresses the social determinants of health (SDOH) by providing access to food, training, and essential services. Our CommUNITY Market serves over 600 families weekly, offering dignified food access and home delivery in partnership with DoorDash.

Beyond immediate relief, ETM focuses on long-term solutions through workforce development, including certification programs in Phlebotomy and Community Health Work. Graduates often see significant income increases within just 12 weeks.

We also host monthly Lunch & Learns to educate and engage the community around key issues impacting health and well-being.

At ETM, we empower individuals to move from survival to stability—offering not just a handout, but a hand up.

The mission of Empowering the Masses is to empower South Dallas residents by addressing the social determinants of health through vocational training, core skills development, health advocacy, and providing access to nutritious food through our CommUNITY Market.

Hire a Case Manager for the CommUNITY Market: To provide personalized support to our neighbors and help navigate resources and services.
Stock the Shelves with Diverse Food Options: Ensuring that we provide nutritious and culturally relevant food for our community.
Hire Ambassadors Providing White Glove Service: Offering a warm welcome, shopping assistance, and help loading vehicles, ensuring that every neighbor feels valued and supported.
Provide Wrap-Around Services for Students: Providing essential resources like transportation, childcare, and other support to help our students succeed in their educational journey.
Hire an Employment Specialist: To assist students after they complete our workforce development programs, helping them secure meaningful employment and continue their path toward financial independence.
